Bronislava Orlická & Zuzana Smrkovská
Bronislava Orlická (*1989, Karviná, Czechoslovakia) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where she studied in the painting studio of Jiří Sopko. She currently lives in Catania, Sicily, and she works in both Prague and Catania. Her work is primarily focused on painting and drawing, and it is characterized by minimalism, imaginative gestures, and soft transitions between colors. In addition to traditional media, she also works with open-source knitting. She uses a home knitting machine from the ’90s (Brother Kh 950) connected to an Arduino microcontroller and the program AYAB, which allows her to knit any pattern. In past years she worked with text and poems (her own or in collaboration with the poets Luboš Svoboda and Dominika Moravčíková). She uses mainly soft viscose yarn, creating fragile, translucent webs. She began this knitting journey in 2018 with sound artist Michal Cáb and designer and knitting technician Zuzana Smrkovská . At the biennale she will exhibit a piece created in collaboration with Zuzana Smrkovská. She is a fan of the science-fiction series Star Trek, in which society of the twenty-fourth century has transcended the paradigm of work and money. She hopes for better tomorrows.
Zuzana Smrkovská (*1991, Zlín, Czechoslovakia) graduated from the textile studio at UMPRUM in Prague. Since 2017, when she met Bronislava Orlická and Michal Cáb, who started knitting on a digital knitting machine together, she has specialized in knitting on flat bed knitting machines and programming them. She completed professional internships at Knitwear Lab in Amsterdam and the TextielMuseum in Tilburg. She works as a technician at UMPRUM, where she is also studying in the doctoral program. She is part of the AYAB community, where she helps new members start knitting.
