Can the Monster Speak? will be the first book by Paul B. Preciado (b. 1970) to be translated into Czech. Philosopher and curator Preciado is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary queer and trans thought. This gripping book dismantles the idea that the binary division of people into men and women is natural, and shows Western societies that they must broaden the scope of what they consider normal so that we can all be free.
bell hooks (1952–2021) was an American writer and feminist theorist who, together with Audre Lorde, ranks among the most influential voices of Black feminism. Readable and accessible, The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love draws on personal experience to show where so-called toxic masculinity comes from: a lack of love and of space to express emotions. Traditional ways of raising boys can have devastating consequences for society, and we need to step out of their shadow.
Both books show that patriarchal ideas of what a “proper” man or woman should be don’t only harm those who don’t fit them. They constrain all of us.
The covers and typesetting of both titles were designed by the duo Tereza Hejmová and Jana Hrádková, and each book is published in two cover variants featuring works by Jan Durina and Tina Bxtq. Durina is an interdisciplinary artist whose intimate work reflects themes of loneliness, loss and vulnerability. The cover of the bell hooks book features reproductions of two of his photographs. Tina Bxtq explores the queer body as a mutable, regenerating material on the border between the human and the non-human, the cute and the monstrous. The photographs on the cover of Paul B. Preciado’s book document Postangelic, a performance the artist staged at the 35M2 gallery in Prague.
