Art will never change the world… or will it? This workshop on activist, political, and socially engaged art builds on the theme of this year’s Biennale Matter of Art: Necessary Wishes, and it invites participants to explore the diverse strategies for communication and connection that the visual arts offer. Together we’ll look at various forms of so-called “artivism,” its limitations, and how each of us can incorporate it into our struggles for a more just world. We’ll draw on a text by theorist and activist Lucy R. Lippard, but we’ll also work with examples of local projects, the artworks surrounding us in the exhibition, and our collective knowledge. Activists, artists, and all curious, courageous souls—whether you have experience with this topic or not—are invited. You can read a translation of key sections of the essay or the entire text in English beforehand, but we will also be reading it together during the session.
