What impact does racism have on one’s self-image, body, and interactions with others? We will share our thoughts on the matter, discussing and listening to one another through collective reading. We will also try to involve our bodies, voices, ears, and backs in the experience. As a foundation for the conversation, we will draw on selected excerpts from Frantz Fanon’s books Black Skin, White Masks (1952) and The Wretched of the Earth (1961). In these texts the author, who was also a psychiatrist, described the impacts of colonialism and racism on the human psyche, mainly in twentieth-century Algeria and France. Based on his highly visual observations, we can attempt to come up with other images and descriptions that portray the contemporary situation and can help us come to terms with it.
