Shabu Mwangi
Lawrence Mwangi (*1985, Nairobi, Kenya) widely known as Shabu, is a Nairobi-based artist who works and lives in the Mukuru slum, where he cofounded the Wajukuu Art Collective. As the director of Wajukuu, Mwangi uses art and cultural practice to engage communities and drive social transformation. Since entering the art world in 2003, he has developed a compelling body of work grounded in social critique, lived experience, and collective healing.
For Mwangi, art is more than a medium; it is a way of revealing life itself. His work challenges systemic inequality, questions the silence imposed on the marginalized, and explores the psychological and emotional effects of violence and isolation. Through abstract expression, he continuously reimagines how we define ourselves beyond our circumstances.
