Tot Onyx is the alter ego of artist Tommi Tokyo, a member of the Japanese musical duo group A, which since 2012 has been exploring how to break down conventional notions of live performance through the engagement of the body, live painting, noise, and poetry. The band’s early work, able to bend expectations both live and in recordings, is an echo of the experiential vocabulary that Tommi Tokyo continues to develop today. It is a practice of rejecting tradition and cliché, which, in the words of Greil Marcus, “Share[s] the principles of negation, rebellion, destruction, and détournement.” Tokyo’s roots in graphic design and photography are reflected in her frequent collaboration with visual artists, which is central to her experimentation with sound and performance.
